Cheap and nicely made - but noxious

The helmet arrived quickly and is of rather nice construction. It does smell rather horribly of gasoline - perhaps from the vinyl strap/suspension. Have been airing it out for a week - the fumes aren't as bad but are still there.

good costume hat

Exactly what is promised on the site - only thing they should add is that the hat is adjustable to fit multiple head sizes.

Cool Helmet, Looks great!

I needed a safari costume for a Cub Scout program I was running and this hat was perfect. I had it on outside all day and it was very comfortable.

Perfect theatre piece

The helmet is a fine replica of the "Mr. Livingston" original. It serves beautifully as a realistic theatre or reenactment costume piece.

Victorian Pith Helmet

Helmet as pictured and as expected. For the price, very reasonable. Easy to adjust headband, and decorative, maybe not as servicable, chinstrap. I won't be going on safari or off to the sudan. But if I were, I would bring it along. It is built to same specs as origional, using modern materials.( I did a bit of research).

I would recomend.

Costume helmet

One of the pitfalls of buying over the internet is that you cannot handle the item before you buy. The item descriptions are often cryptic (or non-extant), and most of the details that a potential customer would want to know are left out. Before I rate this item, I'm going to describe it carefully so that you can know what you are getting before you buy.

This is a white, cloth-covered helmet; it seems to be made of plastic (which would explain the smell. At least one other reviewer mentioned a gasoline smell; to me it smells more like new plastic, but I can see what they mean. The smell wasn't very strong on the one I bought.) The inside is green cloth, with a plastic and vinyl headband that adjusts by means of velcro to help the helmet fit smaller heads. If you have a large hat size, like mine (7 1/2), this helmet will be a bit small; I can wear it, but I cannot lean it forward to shade my eyes. There is a decorative "chin-strap" over the front brim; it is made of cheap-looking vinyl and cannot used.

Pros:
Solid plastic helmet; attractive white canvas cover and authentic-looking green interior.
Easily adjustable headband for people with medium-sized heads.

Cons:
Plastic and vinyl construction; will not stand up to daily use.
Unusable chin-strap made of cheap vinyl.
Inadequate vents.

Over all, if you want a pith helmet for a costume, this will probably work fine for you. It looks great unless you are studying it up close, and it would make a fine part of a British Imperial costume. I suppose there really aren't that many people like myself who would actually wear one of these every day working outside, so this "pith helmet" is perfectly adequate for what most people will want it for. I bought it to use as a real hat, though; and for that it is almost useless.

Without doubt one of the best Pith Helmets I've ever purchased,
and I've purchased a few since my Pater purchased my first one when I was three.
The good thing about this design over the baseball cap is it protects the nape of the neck, and not just the face.
Now I can watch Italy/Brazil/Germany or Spain win the World Cup in South Africa in comfort and style.

Comfortable Summer hat, do not wear to dinner party

Upon receiving this helmet, I noticed something of a smell on the inside, faintly akin to gasoline. I hung it in front of a box fan for a weekend and it got rid of most of the smell, the rest I suspect will fade with time.

This is a great hat for fishing or other outdoor summer activities, shady and cool, but know that if you intend to wear it around town and into buildings, it is a hassle to transport anywhere but on your head. It is however difficult to fault a pith helmet for being cumbersome.

I took this hat to Africa with me and it was great.

Kept my decapitated head shaded and cool even in the desert.

Nice helmet

My 9 years son wanted the helmet, as he loves to watch movies about the zulu war and other victorian wars. The helmet is nice and apart of a minor bump it arrived OK. My son is now ready to ship out to the Sudan under Lord Kitchener to avenge Gral. Gordon, and eager to give hell to the Fuzzy-wuzzies at the battle of Omdurman! I would recommend the purchase of the helmet.

Nice hat, bad packing

It's really a great prop, with an adjustable band to fit all. But when it arrived it was squished into shallow box. Luckily we had a steamer to try and get out the creases because it was for a play and didn't have time to do a return.
